A team of DePaul accounting students once again distinguished themselves and the university by taking first place in the central region of the national Deloitte Audit Case Competition.
The students–Nancy Aviles, Ibrahim Bagasrawala, Lauren Berndt, Calvin Lopez, Javier Ramirez and Samantha Vela–are all members of our chapter of MAHA, the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants. MAHA recently won the 2011 national championship in the annual ALPFA-KPMG Case Competition. Yet another group of DePaul students earned second place, in October, in the Deloitte Regional Tax Competition.
“The judges were impressed with the DePaul team’s going beyond the case requirements,” reports the School’s Prof. Beth Murphy, who was team faculty advisor and coach in both this latest win and the KPMG competition. “When DePaul was announced as the winning team, the judges indicated that DePaul was especially acknowledged for creativity.”
“We all would have been as proud as I was watching this very young team perform and do such a marvelous job representing DePaul.”
Also helping advise the DePaul team was Deloitte Senior Manager Blake Stewart(COM 03). Stewart was a member of the 2003 Beta Alpha Psi team that took our own Fred Lang Case Competition.
And the competition? The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Marquette, College of St. Benedict/St. John’s (Minnesota), the University of Iowa and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. (But all regions do not compete in the national finals each year; this is done according to a rotation, and this was not a year for the central region champ to advance. Perhaps that was good news for other schools in other regions.)
Held at Deloitte offices throughout the nation, the Deloitte Audit Case Competition requires a team to analyze a case that requires some integration of financial accounting, managerial accounting, and general business issues. Case presentations are made before a panel of practitioners. While hypothetical, the cases are developed from practice by the Deloitte Audit Research Department.
