Long-time member and school supporter Mike Whelan (BUS ‘94), a partner with Ernst & Young, has been named to serve as our 21st president, effective Fall 2013. Mike succeeds outgoing president Jim Robbs (BUS ‘80), of Sassetti LLC, who will continue to serve as past president. Whelan’s term of office runs Fall 2013 to Spring 2015.
“Mike brings to L&Q a wide range of DePaul experiences,” notes School Director Kevin Stevens (MST ‘86),”including as a graduate student, lead recruiter, and member of the L&Q Executive Committee, Scholarship Selection Committee and the Accounting Advisory Committee. He knows the school, our students, DePaul, and the organization, so once again L&Q is in great shape with a great leader.”
Whelan has a bachelor degree in economics and international relations and worked for a few years as a research analyst with a bank. He then received his MSA from DePaul, where he was the graduate assistant of current director Stevens, and entered public accounting upon graduation from DePaul. He was admitted to the Ernst & Young partnership in 2006 and currently serves as a partner in EY’s Assurance Services practice. Mike’s close relations with DePaul include years of serving as his firm’s lead recruiter at DePaul and as the DePaul Champion for EY with colleague partner Jim Logothetis (BUS ‘77).
Whelan sees more alumni participation as key: building membership by providing more aggressive outreach and membership benefits, especially our popular L&Q Seminar Series, providing opportunities for our L&Q colleagues to continue to stay connected and network and securing still more scholarship support for top accounting students as L&Q’s chief goals for the future. “The more members we have, the more impact we’ll have,” Whelan asserts.
“We’re very familiar with the ambitious, hard-working DePaul student,” says Whelan. “I’ve been fortunate to see many careers flourish at my firm and others because of a DePaul accounting education. The pressing need is to provide meaningful financial assistance to these young men and women; especially our first-generation students. Through our L&Q scholarship program, we are in some way continuing the Vincentian mission that is the cornerstone of our university.”
Under the L&Q umbrella, L&Q members annually provide more than $350,000 in scholarships and awards; in 2012-13, over 100 deserving students received L&Q support.
Whelan continues, “I think Jim [Robbs], now our past president, summed up DePaul’s and L&Q’s deepest responsibility when he said ‘No deserving student should be denied a DePaul education due to finances . . . not one.’ That’s something I’ll keep in mind the next few years.”
